Key Facts Even with the introduction of HSDPA and HSUPA, evolution of UMTS radio access networks has not reached its end. In order to ensure the competitiveness of UMTS for the next 10 years and beyond, concepts for UMTS long term evolution (LTE) are being investigated. The objective is to achieve a high-data-rate, low-latency, and packet-optimized radio-access technology. Therefore, a study item was launched in 3GPP release 7 on Evolved UTRA (UMTS terrestrial radio access) and UTRAN (UMTS terrestrial radio access network). Core specification work aims at 3GPP release 8 specifications. Notably, EUTRA/LTE uses new multiple access schemes on the air interface: OFDMA (orthogonal frequency division multiple access) in the downlink and SC-FDMA (single carrier frequency division multiple access) in the uplink. Furthermore, MIMO (multiple input multiple output) antenna schemes form an essential part of LTE. The R&S®AMU-K55 option provides R&D engineers who work on LTE with a powerful and versatile solution to generate LTE signals with the R&S®AMU200A signal generator. The option is in line with the 3GPP standard release 8 and covers the physical layers of both the downlink and uplink. R&S®AMU-K55 is updated regularly as the LTE standard evolves.
